Like all bicycles, regular cleaning and maintenance will enable the e-bike to maintain the normal operation of the drivetrain and can extend the service life of some parts. With the consumption of daily riding, rain, mud, and rocks can damage the chain, and the chain needs to be cleaned periodically, which will help keep the e-bike riding safe and fun.
Tools Needed:
A few clean cotton rags
Warm water
Non-corrosive, biodegradable detergent
Bike degreaser
Bike chain lubricant
A bike stand or a friend to help hold the bike (optional)
Nitrile gloves (optional)
A drop cloth (optional)
Cleaning and Lubricating Your Bike's Chain
1. Turn Off the Bike:
Start by turning off your e-bike. Press the key to power down the bike. Then, turn off and remove the battery.
2. Wipe Down the Frame:
Use a clean cloth and warm water (you can add detergent if needed) to gently wipe down the bike frame. Be extremely cautious not to allow water to enter electronic components such as connectors, the controller, or the battery, as this can result in damage.
Note: Never use a hose or directly spray water or liquid onto the bike or its electrical components. Submerging electrical parts in water or liquid is strictly prohibited.
3. Remove Dirt and Debris:
Prior to applying the bike degreaser, use a soft cloth to carefully remove dirt and debris from the chain.
4.Apply Degreaser:
Apply bike degreaser to a clean rag (avoid direct application to the chain) to prevent it from coming into contact with the frame or other bike components.
5. Clean the Chain:
With the degreaser-soaked rag, hold it against the lower section of the chain, positioned between the bottom of the front chainring and the derailleur. Ensure that the degreaser on the towel makes contact with the chain.
Turn the pedal backward while allowing the entire chain to pass through the degreaser on the cloth until each link is thoroughly cleaned.
6. Use of Dry Lubricant:
Once the chain is dry, apply a dry lubricant according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure not to over-saturate the chain.
7. Elevate the Rear Wheel:
Prop the bike on its kickstand so that the rear wheel is elevated off the ground. Alternatively, use a bike stand or have a friend securely hold the handlebar to lift the rear wheel off the ground.
8. Turn the Pedal Forward:
While the rear wheel is off the ground, turn the pedal forward while simultaneously shifting through all the gears.
9. Wipe Off Excess Lubricant:
Use a clean rag to wipe off any excess chain lubricant. Be diligent in keeping the lubricant confined to the internal chain components, such as the pins and rollers, to prevent attracting dirt and grime to the outer plates.
10. Cleaning and Lubricating Tires:
Examine the tires for dirt and debris, using a soft cloth and mild soap to clean them. Keep water away from the motor and electrical components.
11. Dry the Bike:
Use another clean cloth to ensure the entire bike is dry. Store your e-bike in a dry, indoor location, allowing it to dry completely before further use.
12. Battery Re-installation and Test:
Reinstall the battery and thoroughly test the bike before resuming your ride.
